ELVES: Real or Myth?
  • Elves have poised themselves as standard characters in folklore and mythology as well as contemporary fantasy literature. As graceful and magical characters good in agility, wisdom and even in beauty, the characters of elven races have always enchanted people. What origin has man given to these creatures, and does material existence correspond to these mythical beings, or does the spirit of man simply create these images? The historical development of elves, as well as their transformation over the course of becoming the main characters in fantastic stories, is considered in this article.

  • The first concepts on elf like figures can be traced back to ancient folklore in Europe. In Old English, the word *ælf* was used to denote supernatural beings concerning which the term “elf” has been derived. In the context of the Viking sagas and Germanic mythology, the elf was absolutely otherworldly, properly supernatural, and often so luminously enchanting that, in the folktales, one could not even get a hold of them.
